Swing that Dress, If You Dare!

Well I did it!  I bought a dress that was above the knee and I did not feel as uncomfortable as I thought I would.  I found this cute sleeveless jersey swing dress at Old Navy for $15 on sale a few weeks ago and have found it to be quite fun and comfortable to wear out to dinner, shopping or just hanging out.  Because the fabric is jersey, it is soft, hangs beautifully and does not wrinkle too bad.

What is a swing dress?  Well this style came out of the 1940’s-1950’s when the Swing Dance was popular.  I call this a modified version because back then, the waist was usually belted or clinched as they called it, allowing the skirt to flare as they danced and swirled.  Back then, the dress was often coupled with layers of petticoats and crinkle slips.  This modern day version just more or less hangs loose with a flared hem falling at or above the knees, allowing movement and flow.  And I believe the jersey fabric adds to the swirl nicely.

While most of us mature women would not normally be comfortable with dresses above the knees, this fun dress  allows for an exception to that norm.  It would be a great item to pack in your bag for a Get-A-Way weekend or a Summer vacation.  And last but not least always remember, “It Don’t Mean A Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing!”  So go for it if you dare!

  1. Cute dress. Love the pattern. I am surprised that you don’t wear above the knee more often. I never stopped.
